E-Cigarette Rules: The FDA will regulate electronic cigarettes as tobacco products — like regular cigarettes — rather than as drug devices, such as nicotine gum, Dow Jones Newswires reports . The FDA preferred the latter designation, which would have required the agency to review e-cigarettes before they could be sold, but said yesterday it won’t seek further review of a January court decision that classified the devices as tobacco products. Wider Use: The FDA expanded approval of Sanofi-Aventis’s meningitis vaccine Menactra to babies as young as nine months of age, the Los Angeles Times’s Booster Shots blog reports . Approval doesn’t necessarily mean the CDC will put the vaccine on its schedule of recommended immunizations for children of that age. Blocking Relief? : New research suggests the use of

common painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen may blunt the effectiveness of SSRIs, a class of anti-depressants that includes Eli Lilly’s Prozac and Forest Laboratories’ Celexa, the WSJ reports . The finding, which needs to be confirmed by other research, may explain why SSRIs don’t work in everyone; it’s unclear how much painkiller use is required to reduce the anti-depressants’ effectiveness. Free Tests, Few Takers: Medicare beneficiaries aren’t taking advantage of the screening tests and preventive services made free by the health-care overhaul law, Kaiser Health News and the Washington Post report . Experts tell KHN that beneficiaries don’t know about the free preventive services or are confused about what is available. Image: iStockphoto
