As Republicans laid into Max Baucus’s health-care bill Tuesday, the senator said he’d accept some of the more than 500 amendments that other Finance Committee members have suggested for the legislation. The changes would lower the penalty on those who don’t buy coverage and blunt the effects of a tax on high-end health-insurance policies, the WSJ notes . And they’d increase government subsidies to help people buy insurance. His 36-page list of modifications looks largely (but not wholly) designed to win support from other Democrats. Politico lays out which changes are

likely to please which senators — and points out that Baucus accepted some or all of 10 amendments offered by Olympia Snowe, the Maine senator who may wind up being the only Republican to support the bill. Meanwhile, up in Massachusetts, plans are moving ahead to quickly name a successor to Ted Kennedy — a move, the New York Times reminds us , that would give the Democrats a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.
