Another player is getting into the health IT game. Today it will be computer maker Dell who’s going to partner with hospital groups to offer electronic medical records, according to the New York Times . Dell plans to target small practices with 10 docs or less, set-ups where the majority of U.S. docs practice. It will offer the hardware framework for these services, and partner with electronic health records software makers like eClinicalWorks to offer services. But docs in small practices largely continue to rely on paper records stuffed in manila folders. It’s already been experimenting with programs at the Memorial Hermann

Healthcare System in Houston and Tufts Medical Center in Boston, according to the NYT. In April, the company announced it was partnering up with retailer Sam’s Club to offer a “turnkey EMR” package that would “eliminate paperwork, help reduce medical errors and improve patient care” for small medical practices. “The technology has to be a simplified, affordable package for physicians,” Jamie Coffin, general manager of Dell’s health care business told the NYT. “We’re really going after this market in a concerted way.” Image: iStockphoto
