Apparently, Americans are still OK with the idea of taxing rich people to pay for part of the big health-care overhaul now being debated in Washington. But they really don’t like the idea of requiring everyone to buy insurance. In the latest WSJ/NBC poll, 68% of respondents said raising taxes on families making more than $1 million a year was an “acceptable” option. But 60% of respondents said a mandate requiring individuals to buy insurance (with subsidies for people with low and moderate incomes) was “not acceptable.” That’s a huge swing from the WSJ/NBC poll last month , when only 31% of respondents said that option was “not acceptable.” (The wording changed slightly in July to note that people who

could afford insurance but didn’t buy it would pay a penalty or fine.) Respondents were pretty evenly divided on several other elements that have been on the table, including taxing high-end health benefits and requiring most businesses to either offer health benefits or pay a fee to the government. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%. For more on the poll, see the article from this morning’s WSJ . Bonus Poll : The latest New York Times/CBS poll also just came out. Here’s the NYT story , and here’s the poll itself. Illustration: Getty Images
