It's a game of Simon Says when it comes to eating healthy - at least according to research. When eating with others, our food choices tend to be influenced by our dining companion's selection , to follow the norm. Researchers from Radboud University Nijmegen of the Netherlands studied 70 pairs of young women eating together, and discovered that people have a desire to be socially accepted and accomplish this by going with the flow and copying what they see. It's hard not to be part of the crowd; if everyone orders a cosmo, you're more inclined to sip on one as well. The same goes for food choices. If the person you're eating with chooses high-calorie foods like burgers and fries, it's easy to ditch your salad idea and order a cheeseburger, too. The researchers noted that it's difficult to make healthy choices when exposed to the poor eating habits of others. If you're serious about losing weight or eating a healthy diet, keep your health goals in mind when choosing dining companions. Hit the local café or restaurant with fellow health-minded friends to encourage each other to keep it healthy. To increase your success, here are some more ways your friends can help you with your weight loss efforts .

Between meetings, appointments, work deadlines, errands, family obligations, and trips to the gym, our lives can be so busy that we fill our bellies with the quickest, easiest bites we can get our hands on. Whether your goal is to drop unwanted pounds or eat healthier, it's in your best interest to pause before you take your first bite and ask yourself these four important questions. Am I hungry? Seems like a silly question, because you're eating, so you must be hungry, right? Many times we reach for food out of boredom, convenience (the bag of chips was open), depression (chocolate to drown your breakup sorrows), happiness (to celebrate a promotion), or desire (who could pass up the amazing brownies your co-worker brought in?). But if we recently ate, then we're not even hungry. Make sure you're due for a snack or meal before sitting down to eat one. Is this food filling holes in my diet? We eat to live and that means the food we gobble down should offer our bodies the vitamins and nutrients it needs to function properly. Aside from being healthy, our daily diet should also be balanced. If you ate a high-protein breakfast of eggs and Greek yogurt topped with nuts, then for a morning snack, you probably want to eat something that offers your body something besides protein, such as fiber, potassium, or vitamin A. Think of each snack and meal as a piece of your daily diet puzzle; an opportunity to take in what your body is lacking. Keep reading to find out the other two questions you should ask yourself before eating.

Paula Deen in her Today Show appearance. Paula Deen — a celebrity chef known for high-calorie, high-fat recipes like this burger with bacon and eggs on a donut — has confirmed that she has type 2 diabetes. In an interview with USA Today and a sit-down with Al Roker on the Today Show , Deen discusses her diagnosis, which she’s known about for some three years. She told Roker this morning that she didn’t disclose the diagnosis before now because “I had to figure out things in my own head.” She added: “I wanted to bring something to the table when I came forward.” But Deen is not just talking about her disease — she’s getting paid for it. She’s now a spokeswoman for Novo Nordisk, which makes diabetes drugs such as Victoza. (Over at Forbes.com, Matthew Herper wonders if this sort of celebrity spokeswoman role is good for drug companies in the long run.) The website for the drug maker’s new Diabetes in a New Light campaign features Deen and includes recipes very different from those she cooks on her Food Network show — this revamped lasagna is made with extra-lean ground beef, reduced-fat cheese and no-salt-added tomatoes, compared to the Deep-Fried Lasagna from the Food Network archives. Deen didn’t directly answer Roker’s question about specific changes to her own TV cooking style, saying she has always practiced moderation in consuming her traditional Southern-style recipes and encouraged her viewers to do the same. She tells USA Today that she gave up sweet tea, the sugar-heavy iced tea popular in the South. And she’s walking at least a mile on the treadmill. Will she change the way she talks about high-fat meals on TV? “I suspect I’ll stick to my roots but will say a little louder, ‘Eat this in moderation,’” she tells the paper. Type 2 diabetes has a host of risk factors, including, yes, being overweight, according to the American Diabetes Association . Lack of exercise, a family history of the disease, age and race or ethnicity also play a role, the group says. Readers, is Paula Deen a good choice as a pharma-industry spokeswoman for diabetes awareness? Photo: Associated Press/NBC

But the consequences of maintaining a full schedule while battling illness can be big, like prolonging your sickness or getting extra dirty looks from your coworkers every time you sneeze. A recent study even found that driving while you have a cold is the same thing as driving drunk (on four double whiskeys, no less!). Whether or not we actually rest up when we're sick, though, is another story. Tell us, do you power through a sickness and maintain your daily routine, or do make sure you hunker down in bed when you feel the sniffles coming on? Do You Rest Up When You Have a Cold? Yes, I know I'll get better faster and won't infect others. No, I can power through it!
